Description: This 4-part online module will introduce the LNC to the concept of standards of care (SOC) through PowerPoint, case discussion and interactive questions and answers. The LNC will understand what SOC are and how they fit into a medical malpractice case and where to locate various types of information to support or refute a breach of standard of care claim. There will be discussion of the definition of SOC and the four elements of negligence and the relationship to SOC. SOC sources will be reviewed with an interactive demonstration of online resources along with relevance of facility policies and procedures. The role of the expert witness will be explored in establishing the SOC in a particular case example. At the end of these modules, the learner will appreciate the complexity of the standard of care concept and be able to effectively apply new skills to cases and investigate the many resources supplied in the modules.
